TREND ALERT!! Getting Laid off!!
Unemployment is the hottest look from the Fashion Week runways, putting a new spin on a once-stigmatized statement.
“A few years ago, being laid off was a sign of failure,” said top fashion forecaster Cunt Fiercington. “These young designers are bringing their most pressing issues to the runway and it’s paying off, albeit through food stamps.”
Models donned stained sweatpants, bed head, and a look of low morale in a reimagining of the “depression fit”.
“We wanted to send a message to the unemployed baddies of the world, you don’t have to look like you have a salary to look put together,” said designer Slay Girl.
Slay Girl is the lead designer for the new fashion house on the scene, Werk. Their mission is to give people the confidence of a job even if they don’t know where to begin on their resume. This vision is best represented in the finale of the runway presentation, a model rocking nothing but streaked mascara typing cover letters on a laptop.
“It felt very empowering,” said model Boots Down. “So many people need to know that they have nothing to be ashamed of. We see their struggle, and it’s sexy.”
The trend has caught like wildfire across the nation. The day after the collection debuted, layoffs went up a staggering 80% nationwide. Slay Girl and Werk are amazed by the response.
“We knew the collection would cause some talk but we certainly didn’t anticipate overnight change,” said Girl. “This just shows you that fashion really can change the world.”
