Fuck You: Artificial Intelligence and “Artists” Who Use It
If you’re an artist, you should be disgusted by AI.
If your purpose in life is to be creative, AI should DISGUST you. Not just make you feel threatened. It should disgust you.
If you’re an artist and you use AI in the process of creating something, that means that your original idea was garbage. Completely worthless. Is it okay to be a little meaner about what everyone else is making for the sake of preserving our humanity? If so, then I suppose that–if what you’re making is absolute brainless drivel–the choice to enhance your worthless, unfunny shitpile with AI images or text proves that definitively.
If you’re someone in my community who postures as a “creative,” an “artist,” and are comfortable using AI, or even find AI funny or a worthwhile tool to create comedy, the root issue here is your reasoning for being in a creative field. You don’t actually give a fuck about making anything. Everything AI-generated is true and utter filler–therfore, if you’re a comedian who uses AI, that means you think all of the words you write as a comedian are filler, too. So you’re doing it for–what, exactly? Clout? The opportunity to hang out with comedians? Comedians are unequivocally the most frustrating category of people. What is the fucking point of participating if you don’t also enjoy making/consuming comedy?
There are enough data-driven takes on the downsides of AI that I don’t feel the need to repeat them, because truly what I’m arguing is that AI “creates” garbage and if you don’t immediately recognize that as true, I don’t understand what you’re doing in a creative field. If you look at an AI-generated image or read an AI generated piece of writing and go, “damn, I know I’m not supposed to like AI, but that’s funny!” then you are a troglodyte. AI should disgust you. If it doesn’t make your stomach turn, if it doesn’t piss you off, you’re not an artist.
Of course, as time goes on it seems like AI is unavoidable. I don’t point the finger at the consumer for something only CEOs and the 1% can stop. I don’t blame the downfall of society on the individual who reads the Gemini AI summary, instead of scrolling down to click the wikipedia article. But normalizing AI by bringing it into artistic fields numbs us and makes us ignore actual, human-created art too. We’re inundated by so much filler that even though AI art is obviously worse, we simply start caring less about human art, too.
Does what I’m saying matter at all? Probably not. The people I’m making reference to here are definitely not reading this. Of course they’re not. They’re not even reading the shit they claim to have written after putting a prompt into “chat.” Oh yeah, that reminds me. If you call ChatGPT “chat,” you have less than nothing to offer society. And sincerely, fuck you <3
