A Review: Holes by Louis Sachar

Holes seems like an interesting book. I like the author’s name. His name is Louis, which reminds me of St. Louis. I’m from there.

I know the book is about a bunch of little boys and I think they’re doing unpaid labor and I assume there’s digging involved? Digging holes. Because it’s called Holes. Also there is an owl involved I think for some reason? I’m not sure. I like owls though. One time, there was an owl who decided to live in the space between my family’s roof and the drain pipe. I was amazed because I don’t know how he squeezed himself in there. ‘Cause he was chunky.

I was obsessed with owls at the time because it was 2011 and owls were a big thing. I had an owl necklace, another owl necklace, and owl sheets. They were from Pottery Barn Kids and they were cute.

So I was pumped to see this owl. I ran back and forth across the yard to see if the owl would turn its head to look at me. IT DID. That experience was super fun, but I was a little concerned for the owl. Because what if it was stuck?

The next day, the owl wasn’t there anymore. I felt a little sad because I missed the owl, but I also felt happy to know the owl was able to choose freedom. Knowing freedom was his choice means it was also his choice to stay in our yard for a little while the day before. And that makes me feel nice.

Or maybe he was just stuck, and then eventually got unstuck. Anyway, I’m assuming that in Holes, the little boys had more of that kind of experience. But unlike the owl, they got through their conundrum with the spirit of camaraderie and companionship. Or at least I assume they do. I haven’t read the book.
